A rather high-yielding, stable, easy-to-grow strain with a big central cola and few side branches. The smell is very strong. Humidity control is a must, otherwise the dense buds are prone to bud rot.
Strong, long lasting and relaxing, it won't give you any paranoia and will lead to couch-lock when overindulged. Some users complain that the high is strong but not interesting. Women like it a lot. A Cannabis Cup winner.

Mazar is one of the strongest and best varieties ever created by Dutch Passion. Our original Mazar is a 1980s classic made from a special Skunk#1 crossed with a prized Afghani, the genetics were upgraded in 1997 and Mazar remains one of our best selling varieties of all time. Mazar has a Christmas-tree appearance, the heavy side branches ensure large harvests. The growth vigour and toughness make Mazar a good choice for less experienced growers. Mazar is a real Afghani hash plant with extremely heavy resin production and great potency. She may need supporting at the end of flowering and produces notably strong odours.
Mazar was one of the first Dutch Passion varieties available in feminized seeds, since then she has been used by other seed banks in the creation of new varieties. The buds are sticky, highly aromatic, sweet and earthy with a taste of good Afghani hash and hints of pine/citrus. The strong effect is very physical, powerful yet relaxing. A happy, cozy and numb combination with a contemplative and meditative mental quality.
Available in regular, feminized and automatic feminized seeds. An established classic, a multiple prize winner, highly recommended.
Reviews
David (dutch-passion.nl):
Every time I ask my girlfriend what we should grow next I always get the same answer Mazar, its easy to grow and I have got an average of 100 grams a plant every time I have grown it in coco. The taste is deep rich and earthy and the high is fantastic and long lasting. In our humble opinion it is Dutch Passions finest. In fact I have just put some more on an hour ago.
Chris E (dutch-passion.nl):
Smoking some Mazar at the moment and it is some high grade bud that is for sure. I can not get enough of the high from her and she keeps giving the more you smoke. Very vigorous plants which were nice, compact and easy to grow! They needed moderate and did not stretch much. She is currently one of my favourite strains and a great one to grow.
Sexy Stefan (dutch-passion.nl):
Man this is a STRONG weed, and full of flavour. After I grew her I noticed she became noticably stronger after a 3 week cure. She gives a great stoney high with no paranoid edge to it which is a bit like Blueberry. Yields were well above average and some pheno's are XL yielders so watch out for a keeper. One thing that I should mention (no-one else did) is that this weed stinks like hell. My normal tupperware stash box seals the aroma of weed inside it. But not Mazar! This weed is so strong it stunk like hell even when sealed inside the container. So I put the container in a sealable food storage bag and she still stank. So I put another sealable bag around it and it still stank! Then I put the whole lot in a larger tupperware container and that just about keeps the aroma inside. But you can still smell a faint rich-coffee type of smell, if you concentrate. Great weed, great flavours and aroma. I totally recommend this variety but the only thing I would warn people about is to store your stash under several layers of containment as it is an old-school stinker. I have only come across one other variety with this ability for the smell to permeate a sealed container and that was the Dutch Passion White Widow (which was also a top top smoke) Ja , top quality weed. Oily, resinous and super strong, Just dont think you can wander around with a joint of this stuff in your pocket cos everyone will be able to smell it.
Blageur (dutch-passion.nl):
yeah this is a very strong smoke but what the others didnt say is that this is easy to grow too. Thats got to be one of the reasons why Mazar is such a popular one - everyone can grow it. Or not? It is super strong weed, and it lasts for a long time on the shelf if you cure it well. People that grow their own weed and cant be bothered giving it a good cure shouldn't bother growing decent varieties IMO. Go and grow some bag seed instead. So props to those dutch boys for this one ;-) I grew this one a few times and no problems with her. She is a medium high strain and I agree she does smell a bit but so do all weed so you cant let that put you off. The bud is hard and sticky which is perfect combination for me. Mazar is a quality quality smoke and easy to grow - dont forget that yo
Bjorn (dutch-passion.nl):
Mazar is one of the consistent varieties for me and I have grown twice a year ever since the 1990s. I grow Mazar every couple of years and she is always the same. You can taste the quality from the first smoke and you know she is a strong one. I get my seeds from the headshop near the Bulldog cafe in Amsterdam as they get fresh stock direct from Dutch Passion The plants are packed with bud by the end of flowering but they also smell quite a bit so take precautions. Thats the only problem for me, I have to take them out of the veg cabinet when they start smelling cos I have no carbon filter there. But apart from that you cant go wrong. Once again, watch out it is a strong one to smoke. But reliable also
Mad Karl (dutch-passion.nl):
If you want a really strong Afghani that will slap you back onto the sofa then this is the strain to go for. Mazar is easy to grow and has heavy bud production. One of the local Mazar growers uses it as a medical weed and swears by it. Great for indoor grows and easy enough for noobs too. DP, don't change your Mazar, it is great as it is. Karl
Russiangrower (dutch-passion.nl):
Best shit. we just enjoyed.... the next morning it will be difficult..)
Air Freshener (icmag.com):
Grew this weed over the summer, harvested last day of September.
I didn't smoke for the couple of weeks it was drying in order to clear my system a bit. After 10 days of drying I rolled a joint (weed only, no tobacco) and took two normal-sized hits. I'm glad I didn't smoke more.
It inhaled smoothly and smelled very strong on the exhale. I can't say I noted much more than that about the actual smoke.
The high is big-time creeper. It took a good 2-3 minutes to start feeling it, and then it started kicking in, little by little, for the next 15 minutes or so. Within twenty minutes I was fucking stoned, just on the verge of being too much. It was still enjoyable, and it had kind of a stabilizing effect; even though I was stoned out of my mind, I didn't get into any anxiety or paranoia. Instead I just sat, chilled, and enjoyed the ride.
I've read reports saying that Mazar seems to be "missing" something. I now think I understand to what they were referring. It's not a "total" stone, if you can gather my meaning. Some parts of my faculties seem to be affected while others don't. It makes me alert, and senses are enhanced. There is no couchlock; no feeling of weight that comes with some other types of weed.
It's certainly different from any other high I've experienced, but that should be taken with a grain of salt as I haven't experienced more than 4-5 types of weed, nor do I smoke often. I can say that I grew DP Masterkush a few years ago and I think I liked that better than this. There was just something more wholesome about it, like a steak dinner with all the trimmings, bread, salad, soup, veggies, wine, and dessert. Using the same analogy, this Mazar is heavy on the wine, salad, and dessert, but lacks the satisfaction that comes from that rich, juicy main course. It's kind of like drinking on an empty stomach, if that makes any sense. Heh, actually reminds me a bit of a Vodka and Red Bull.
Still, in my opinion, this is decent cannabis. To a person who only smokes occasionally, I would say one or two hits will get you stoned, three hits will knock you on your ass. To you daily smokers, I might say it'd be an interesting addition to your collection. Might be best as a morning smoke, because you get high without being weighed down with other effects that could affect your performance the rest of the day.
If I had to give it an overall rating, it would be a 7/10. It gets you fucking stoned, which is, after all, what you want. It just doesn't give you everything you may have come to expect from an award-winning strain.
litebuzz (icmag.com):
i grew mazar for a few years...don't think i'd ever buy it again...i mean its okay, but in my opinion not worth the big price of fem seed price.
ThinkGREEN (icmag.com):
it was decent. but I expected more.
Locoporro (icmag.com):
Mazar From DP is so powerfull and tasty, she's one of my favorite Indica !!! I lost a great pheno, i have to find consolotaion with an other phenotype who smell pee of cat and a sauce sweet and sour, not really the same... I'm little sad about that lost... This old pheno smelled really skunky and Hashy, when you smoked it, that was just pleasure !!!
DutchPassionTony (uk420.com):
She has been a favourite for many years, a storming smoke that will have you on your backside hoping no-one knocks at the door or rings your mobile.
Arnold Layne (uk420.com):
Mmmmmazar! Very tastiful deliciousness to smoke, I recall. Hit like an X-press train! Must try some more soon.
Stan909 (uk420.com):
Been growing DP Mazar myself almost exclusively for the last 4yrs (although not just now) so I obviously like it!
Mine are pretty robust plants, tough-old leaves, thick stems & lush dark green colours… dead easy to grow IME & yield well…
I’ve not found them as easy to train (e.g. scrog) as other strains with more sativa in them… but they can take a bit of rough treatment…
Mine don’t smell very much during a grow… during curing though my buds do stink – if I burp them then the room stinks within a few seconds – that particular smell is sweet to begin with but gets a bit overpoweringly sickly after a while. Mine do stink when smoked too… more hashy than anything else.
Taste… mine are spicy/peppery hash tasting which is nice… but there’s also a hint of aftershave/pine disinfectant which kicks-in after a while… personally I’m less keen on that…
I let mine go for about 8-9wks and I wouldn’t describe the stone as ‘up’. They put me right on my arse ‘til I developed a bit of tolerance but even after smoking mazar for a few years it still does the business…
Just don’t plan on getting much done afterwards ‘cos it probably won’t happen…
They don't grow very tall being indica dom etc... depends how long you veg them
I've never topped mine so I don't know how the results would compare with LST & scrogging... when I say mine are difficult to train it's simply that the stems are quite thick & internodal lengths are short meaning that it's harder work than a more leggy, floppy, flexible plant... the results are still good however
What I have found is that all the plants in the pack of seeds I bought were pretty consistent in terms of stone & taste. They were pretty consistent in terms of form & structure too although I have one pheno that is a bit more skunky in it's bud structure, less leafy etc.
Being an indica the buds on mine are quite leafy which is a headache when it comes to trimming & manicuring the buds... takes me feckin' ages Also I've found it to be more prone to budrot as a result... although if you've already grown other indica doms to completion without getting rot then you'll probably be good! - As we know that's as much down to environment as it is to strain/variety
user128 (seedfinder.eu):
Excellent indica strain, heavy effects. A must-have for haschisch lovers.
EX3LOR (seedfinder.eu):
fem seeds pheno1......the mazar smells like garlic lemon pine incense kush....the garlic is most present direkt after chop and cures in to a lemony zest pine kush....the taste is zesty lemony pine a bit like bho....if its burned ,it fills the air with incense like a haze or an afgahn kush incense pheno.....good resin production...low yield...low hight...minimal stretch...dense buds.....pretty classic oldscool impression....not my favorite strain but it has its place.......
plantepaz (seedfinder.eu):
I have problems in vega. The flora was perfect, but only ~23g in this plant... and not "the better". Not bad if you need sleep.
sunnyside (icmag.com):
The taste is perfume/pine/floral/incense, in that order. I don’t know why but I associate her taste and smell as being feminine, I think it has something to do with her pink and purple hues. And her smell is nothing I would naturally associate with cannabis. Even in flower her buds smell more like something you would smell in a florist shop rather than a skunks den. The yield is better than average as well. This plant grows like a pole with minimal side branching, which makes this plant ideal for SOG techniques. The unassuming smell and yield make this strain ideal for commercial purposes. What also makes this bud appealing is it’s jar appeal. Not as pretty as some, but it has an exotic look to it.
The high is pretty strong, but I find that it lacks character. I always get ripped off of her but, for some reason I always feel unsatisfied. Even after a large sized joint, even though I might be stoned to the bone, I feel like I need something else. DP says that this strain is up close to 20%, but that sounds a little high for what I have here. If anything I would say Mazar is a bit milder than most strains I’ve tried. Women absolutely love this strain. I have yet to find a selection that the ladies like more. Maybe it is the ’feminine' smell and taste, or maybe it is because it is milder than most. Either way I am a happy camper So if you have any lady tokers in your life that you would like to treat. Grow em some Mazar and they will love you forever!!!
I have grown bushes and sog's with good results from both.
kov (icmag.com):
I grew 2 mazar DP plants last year... one of my plants was white pheno, the other was purple pheno... they had no potency, no soul, no energy whatsoever... Mazar made me quit Dutch Passion for good.
Amd (icmag.com):
mazar that my friend grew, was very nice lookin sticky most tight nugs i've ever seen....but the high was somehow missing something, like it didnt deliver the full punch or something...very stinky plants i have to say...
Organic Hydro (icmag.com):
I'm smoking some 15 month cured Mazar now, it's my last nug of her, and it's breaking my heart knowing she's no-longer in my rotation, good thing this Pheno type is fairly common, as my G/F wants me to grab another 2 - 3 packs of beans and find her again it truely is a ladies favorite smoke!
Guest (icmag.com):
I grew Mazar and was very happy with it except for one thing - it gave me the munchies real, real bad. I was fighting not to stuff my face and turn into an elephant woman. I was almost glad when it was gone - my weight fell back to normal range right away. I would mostly recommend this strain to med users who need an appetite stimulant.
bonecarver_OG (icmag.com):
ive grown out mazar 3 grows and im now on my 2ns last go with them. i have 3 mazar moms i try to get rid of - since i dont think they are worth cloning and keeping any longer. i hope they give me some big last buds,,, but they wont be potent,, i kow thet by now. for an indica its really not anythng to remember besides it lookds pretty... i decided to make BHO with one of them and ice hash from the rest. maybe concentrated it will be better
Painfull (icmag.com):
I have grown Mazar a few times and use it as my med. strain.I am not sure how long you growers flowered her and what colors the trichromes were but i let mine go for 10 weeks of flowering and trics 60% amber. They were potent to me. The small christmas tree type were the most potent and gave the best high... if used for anxiety and depression there is better strains to be used.
kokua (icmag.com):
when she was ripe, she was good, but not nearly as satisfying as others I've grown and sampled. She is hella potent, but kind of reminded me of the Arcata TW...too much head and not enough substance for me... I suffer from severe anxiety and slight depression...I smoke herbs to help my head. I prefer heavier, stonier buzzes that calm my nerves...the heady herbs sometimes make my condition worse... I grew only one phenotype of mazaar that was selected by a friend. I have no doubt that there are stronger phenotypes available. I do know of several growers that grew mazaar for weight. They agreed...good tasting, strong pot, just not personal stash quality.
jm420 (icmag.com):
The mazzar was a freebie every order and was absolute junk,.gave up after 2 runs.
MissGreenDreamz (icmag.com):
I'm super attracted to Mazar, and it takes up over 50% of my garden. Sooo sticky, but the color and smell seems different than what you're describing. Sorta floral, but kind of softened smell similar to play-doh or something I can't put my finger on. There is something irresistable about it that is feminine and I am naturally drawn to it for some reason like you're saying. I do think its the smell. Tastes great, I do loooove smoking her, but she just knocks me out and there's no middle happy or creative place with it.
morgzdj (thctalk.com):
ive grown out dutch passions mazar a few times now soil and hydro. cant fault the strain huge fat typical indica leaves and huge fat buds even the lower buds weigh quite a bit ive managed 3 oz a plant but the brother in law has managed 25 0z off 4 plants in a 2.4 x 1.2 budbox in water farms under 1 x 600w hps on a light mover. the smoke really puts you on ur ass if u leave it go 9-10 weeks smells really earthy and musky all of my mates who had some want me to do it again.
luvtogrow (thctalk.com):
Grew 10 mazar fem seeds 9 plants short indica, nice yield, good smoke, very uniform. 1 plant was sativa, skunky and was a 10 in every aspect. The other pheno about 7 or 7.5.
SOGmonsters (rollitup.org):
Growth: (9 of 10) easy to grow and quick to clone, awesome if height is an issue for your set up.
Yield: (9 of 10) Great yield, very dense buds
High: (8 of 10) awesome stuff, classic indica mostly body with a hint of a head high
Bag appeal: (9 of 10) an impressive sack any day of the week.
Comments: keep the humidity low, brown mold in dense buds has been a past issue... Its got a nice smell but its not too "stinky" certainly not like my OG kush that you can smell a block away haha
potroast (rollitup.org):
I bought the seeds in '97, and I kept a Mazar mother for 9 years, and I grew many crops of her, and made many, many clones for patients. Beautiful plants, good yield, flowering time 63-67 days. Shows distinct indica traits in growth and high.
The303Stoner (420magazine.com):
Great smoke and easy to grow it adds more buds late in flower.
Gnarlednugget (420magazine.com):
I only let her go 8 weeks. She coulda gone 9 and been better. I used a 400w HPS.
Grow Reports
Grow Report #1
In 1999, I let three feminised Mazar seeds germinate in Jiffy pots. After four days, all of them had come off the ground and were transplanted to 6 litre soil pots, developing very well under some fluorescents for the first two weeks. The plants were short in height and had dark green leafs, exhibiting a classical indica look. Beginning from week three, the plants were illuminated by a 400 W HPS lamp and had grown to a height of 40-50 cm four weeks after germination. There was very moderate side-branching, suggesting that these ladies would basically yield one fat and long main cola in the end. However, flower development had to be thoroughly observed, since the plants were grown from feminised seeds. And indeed, two of the plants revealed 2-3 single male flowers during week four of blooming. These were detected and removed in time, before they had the chance to release their baneful pollen. No additional male flowers would show up during the remaining weeks of flowering so that the two plants could develop proper unseeded buds. Probably this very slight hermaphrodism was caused by the fact that the Mazars were not grown in accordance with the Dutch Passion cultivation recommendations for feminised seeds, it was e.g. far more warmer in the grow room than recommended. In the same year, two Mazars were grown from feminised seed in a greenhouse in Northern Germny and turned out to flower 100% female, reaching a height of about two meters in the end, with giant rock-hard resinous colas. But back to the product Mazars: Those three plants were very homogeneous and almost stopped length growth after they had entered the flowering stage.
In the end, they measured only 50-60 cm, exhibiting long, thick and resinous main colas and some smaller, but very solid side-buds. The calyx-to-leaf ratio was quite favourable, offering many fat calyxes along with a moderate amount of flower leafs, everything frosted with resin. The buds smelled very sweet'n tangy and yielded 23-28 grams per plant. Keeping in mind those 19,5% THC that an independent laboratory has measured with Mazar, the expectations for its psychoactive turn were rather high. And whew, it really gave a very strong mental performance, effecting a long-lasting, stoney indica high that was slightly freshened by a certain sativa influence, too. The taste was spicy-sweet, not acrid in the mouth, but quite mild for a mostly indica.
Grow Report #2
This weeks diary features a grow of Mazar, White Widow and Dark Delight. The diary comes from ‘Shire’.
Shire started his seedlings under 110w Fluorescent lights, and when the plants were strong enough he transferred them to a 1.2m x 1.2m tent. The tent had a 600w dual-spectrum HPS bulb, the plants were grown in coco/pebble mix and hand watered with Canna nutrients.
The plants were grown vegatively for just over 4 weeks with lights on for 18 hours per day. Temperatures in the tent were 28ºC (lights on) and 20ºC (lights off). Shire also took some cuttings from his favourite plants. Blooming was initiated by reducing the daily light to 12 hours.
Shire finished blooming the plants without any major issues, the whole grow was uncomplicated and straightforward. There were no significant problems and the three Dutch Passion varieties produced 9 well proportioned plants with plenty of buds and a rich coating of resin.
The following comments come from Shire himself:
“The Mazar is definitely as good as it looks, very strong and so full of piney flavour on the inhale and exhale then the limbs get a bit limp with heavy eyelids, a stunning smoke, high and body effect, one I will be doing in the future for sure 100%. When you break a bud open there are hints of citrus orange too. The relaxed stone reminds me of a hash I managed to get years ago called Kasmir twist, very more-ish indeed”
“All in I have enjoyed this grow from start to finish and will definitely be doing these again, in fact I will be flowering some clones soon, which have been topped 3 times. I think I do have a favourite of the three varieties, but it is a close run thing......Mazar gets it, I just love the relaxing effect.”
Grow Report #3
This weeks customer review comes from Alex, an experienced European self-sufficient cannabis home grower.
Alex specialises in organic growing methods and a strong focus on the final quality of the cannabis. He grows in a soil preparation with 6 weeks of organic nutrients already blended into the soil that will cover the germination phase, the growing and stretching of the plant.
Alex allowed a week for germination and then used 9 litres containers for the first 25 days vegetative growth under a 400W metal halide light rich in blue spectrum light.
A simple and proactive approach is used with regards to illness and potential fungus diseases: 2.5ml/litre of Calcium (Bio Canna) is used once a week during the grow phase only (in order to strength the plant cells against odium and other potential fungus during the blooming phase)
The following 1-10 days allowed for sex identification with the lighting switched to a 600W HPS which was on for 12 hours each day: 12 hours of light followed by 12 hours of darkness.
Once the female plants had been identified they were re-potted into 11 litre containers and allowed to continue blooming until 30% of the trichomes showed amber colorations
A thorough check/quality check was done using multiple samples collected on the plant, and checked with a USB Microscope
At this point they were harvested, water-cured for few minutes to remove any dust, and finally slowly dried in the dark at 19 degrees and 35% humidity). Then they were cured for about 1 to 2 months, opening the jar every 2 days for about 1 hour.
Using the Alpha CAT home test kit Alex then measured the cannabinoid levels to determine the quality of the cannabis he had produced. Alex always keeps cuttings from each variety he has grown, this allows him to identify and keep the very best genetics that he comes across. Its a technique which more and more home growers are starting to use now that THC home-testing kits are affordable enough to be used... The Mazar grown by Alex Murphy had a 22% THC content, and Blueberry at 18% THC was not far behind.
Smoke test:
Mazar (Green phenotype):
- the smell is very strong at first, when grinding the buds. Really quickly a spicy, floral and "muddy" fragrance - bit like a good Scottish whisky if you see what I mean - will fulfil the space where ever you will be.
- The first blows are sweet with nice citrus notes - followed by a heavy and sweet and warm smoke, very far from the (spicy and muddy) first impression l
- after the 3rd blow, you start to slowly feel the THC pumping
- The "high" is pretty good, and definitely one of the strongest I grew this season. Not for daily use :) you may forget your keys somewhere ...
